Treble Choir

OMEA All-State Choir Auditions

First of all, it was so great to see so many of you today! Can’t wait to see Treble Choir and Windjammers tomorrow. There seems to be a great energy this year- what is it that makes the beginning of the year so special, and how can we find this energy when we need it most? If you haven’t already, check out A Cappella’s performance of our alma mater from today- good music is already being made at LO!

OMEA All-State Auditions are now OPEN to all students in grades 9-12!

8/30/2017- audition recordings begin
9/27/2017- audition recordings and application+audition fees ($13) are paid to our bookkeeper, Ms. Huerd
10/20/2017- audition results are emailed to students. If accepted, it is $300 to register for All-State.
12/05/2017- music is mailed to directors and distributed to students
1/12/-1/14/2018- OMEA All-State Choir and Concert

The OMEA All-State Treble and Tenor/Bass Choirs are auditioned choirs comprised of the best singers from the state of Oregon. Students work with prominent choral conductors (Treble Choir: Amanda Quist from Westminster Choir College, Tenor/Bass: Joshua Habermann from University of North Texas) learn advanced-level choral music, stay with other great musicians, and put on a concert on the final night. All students are encouraged to try out, especially those seeking more audition experience, those students who have already experienced success in our program, or if you are simply looking for a new challenge and a great experience with music.

Audition materials can be found here. You will practice the major scale, chromatic exercise, “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” sing your part in the chorale along with a recording of the other voice parts playing in the background (NOTE: sopranos will sing the alto line), and you will sight read.

The audition is NOT live- recordings must be made with Mr. Schwalbach. Ensure that you are well-rehearsed before your audition- because of the new chorale singing and sight reading components, your preparation on the scale/chromatic/”My Country ‘Tis of Thee”/prepared chorale exercises can help your scores greatly! Pay your registration/audition fee ($13) to our bookkeeper and schedule a recording time with Mr. Schwalbach (email or text choir office, 503.479.5698) BEFORE SEPTEMBER 27- in order to ensure all recordings can be processed, there will be no exceptions. Practice intentionally, and do not hesitate to contact Mr. Schwalbach if you have any questions.

New Ensemble! and other program changes for 2017-18

Some exciting news changes are afoot for the LO Choirs program!

  1. Treble Choir and Laker Choir will be a common first year experience for all students entering the choir program, unless students have had prior musical experience (band, orchestra, PYC, OCC, or other school choir experience). Both groups will continue to be non-auditioned, and students are encouraged to repeat the course if they enjoy the experience of singing in a treble or tenor/bass choir. This should help give each student entering the program a chance to develop a strong foundation of musical and vocal skills, share a common choral experience upon entering LOHS, and give every student the best possible chance to be in a strong ensemble their first year.
  2. First year students that want an extra challenge are welcome to audition for Bel Canto/A Cappella (see audition page for additional information). Contact Mr. Schwalbach if interested. If vocal quality and sight reading are of the level of those ensembles, students will be invited to join those groups but must also be enrolled in Treble Choir or Laker Choir. This expectation is similar to the requirement of students enrolled in Windjammers to also be enrolled in A Cappella- strong singers are also expected to lead in a core choral ensemble.
  3. BRAND NEW FOR THIS YEAR! We will be starting an auditioned chamber choir for that will meet from 7:35-8:15am on Thursdays. This group will focus on more advanced music (pop a cappella, vocal jazz, madrigals, and motets) in a focused setting. Students would perform at concerts and gigs in the community. Auditions are open to motivated freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. This experience would serve as great preparation for those interested in auditioning for Windjammers. Auditions will take place the third week of school (September 11-14). Specific audition details, along with signups, will be posted by September 5th.

As always, do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions! Be well. -schwalbach
